About

AirbusAirbus is one of the world's leading aircraft designers and manufacturers, with more than 5,000 of its jetliners currently operated by customers around the globe.

Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus produces 14 different types of aircraft, from the 100-seat A318 to the 525-seat A380 — the largest commercial airliner ever built.

A subsidiary of EADS, Airbus has an international network of production sites, engineering centres and support facilities in regions such as Europe, China, the United States, India, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Airbus is committed to eco-efficiency — keeping air travel affordable while minimising its effects on the environment. In fact, Airbus is the first aerospace company in the world to earn ISO 14001 "full life-cycle approach" certification. This recognises the company's use of an environmental management system (EMS) to monitor and minimise the environmental impact of its production processes and airliner products from the design phase to the end of their useful service life.

In addition to its focus on eco-efficient aircraft design, Airbus also addresses environmental concerns through co-operative programmes and research in areas that include alternative energy sources and bio-fuels, modernising air traffic management and lowering emissions.

A unique partnership

In 2008, Airbus signed a partnership with the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which aims to conserve biodiversity, encourage sustainable use of its components, and promote fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of resources.

Airbus and the CBD believe that promoting biodiversity is a global concern that demands commitment from everyone — international companies, world organisations, and the global population as a whole.

To support this goal, Airbus is backing the CBD's Green Wave programme — an education and youth outreach programme designed to raise awareness of the crucial role biodiversity plays in our lives and our futures.

The Green Wave programme supports the CBD's mission on communication, education and public awareness — and contributes to the International Day for Biological Diversity's celebration each year.

Working with National Geographic

In June 2009, Airbus and the non-profit National Geographic Society established a partnership aimed at supporting the United Nations in tackling the global loss of biodiversity.

Supporting both The Green Wave educational project and the UN-designated International Year of Biodiversity 2010, this partnership intends to increase knowledge and understanding of biodiversity among young people - the decision-makers of tomorrow.

Through a global multimedia campaign involving National Geographic and National Geographic Kids magazines — as well as television broadcasts and online media— the partnership aspires to develop the world's largest and most far-reaching biodiversity outreach programme directed at children and their families.

Elements already in place include a global biodiversity photography contest — with National Geographic's world-renowned photographer Joel Sartore to champion the programme through a series of events — as well as an initiative among Airbus' worldwide staff of 52,000 to promote to The Green Wave project in community schools.

Both Airbus and National Geographic are fully committed to promoting the message for sustainable development and supporting the CBD in reaching its goals.
